“Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path” Psalm 119:105
In many parts of the world, electricity and its power are not readily available as we have in the USA or other advanced countries. In the night hours the houses and streets there are covered by thick darkness. In those areas, they understand the value of a lamp in dark hours. When I was a young man growing up in such an area, I remember my Dad would come to the bus stop with his lamp and thereby I can safely walk home from the bus station. The roads were not safe, especially in the night time. There were poisonous snakes and scorpions which would come to the mud road where we used to walk, from the nearby areas of grasses and bushes. Without a lamp or a torchlight, the way is not visible to walk safely. There is also a chance that in such thick darkness you could walk off the mud road and walk in wrong paths. Even thieves can hide on the sides of the way and attack you. In those areas even today, people use the lamp or torchlight to ward off the dangers. Also inside the house, in such areas of the world, when there is no electrical power, people would be blind and unable to do anything- not able to cook food, not able to study the school lessons, etc.
Today’s Bible verse says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet.” It means the Word of God, the Bible, is a lamp for our feet in the dark hours of life. I do not know what trials or darkness you face today. One thing I know. We all encounter various types of trials and darkness in our life’s journey. We would wander in those times what steps or what course of action we should take, and we desperately need the guidance and counsel. Beloved, no one can give you perfect and correct advice and counsel like the Lord gives in His Word. His perfect guidance and counsel are in the book called Bible. Without the light of the Word of God, we would be lost and can end up in dangerous places. Bible, the Word of God, serve as a lamp for our feet. In other words, it guides our feet so that we won’t tread into dangerous places and hurt ourselves more.
Not only the Bible or the Word of God is a lamp in the dark hours of our life, it a light on my path on an ongoing basis. It sheds light on my path so that I can continue walking on the right path. Some people walk on the wrong path because of the absence of the light of the Word of God in their life. They knowingly or unknowingly end up in ways of sin and destruction like a simple sheep end up in dangerous places. But those who read the Bible and keeps the Bible verses in their heart and apply it can make right decisions with the help of the Lord and His Holy Spirit and continue walking in the right and correct path. Psalm 119:130 says “the teaching of your word gives light, it gives understanding to the simple.” You see when a person read the Bible, it teaches and in the process of teaching, it sheds and gives light on the path of everyday life.
Proverbs 6:23 says, the commandment of the Bible is a lamp, and the teaching of the Bible is light. The commandments and teachings of the Bible will keep you from evil people and their smooth and destructive tongues. They caused many to fall into their wicked traps and allurements. But you would gain wisdom from the word of God to avoid many pitfalls like these.
Finally, Bible informs us the embodiment of the Word of God is Jesus Christ Himself. Bible says He is the eternal Word. He (the Word) was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1). The Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). The eternal Word became flesh and lived among us, and people have seen God in Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said, “anyone who has seen me have seen the Father God.” (John 14:9).
With the Bible, the Word of God in your hand, and Jesus Christ, the embodiment of the eternal God on your side, you are safe and secure one hundred percent. He is the lamp for your feet and light on your path.
