The Advocate Who Is Qualified To Take Your Case and Deliver You!
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.” (1 John 2:1-2).
Bible says if we have fellowship with God in and through Jesus Christ, His blood purifies from all our sin (1:7) upon confession of our sins to Him (1:9). However, Apostle John also says he is writing this so that you may not sin. We should strive our best to avoid sin with the help of the Holy Spirit at all cost because sin harms and endanger us and affect our fellowship with God/people.
On the other side, one thing a sincere and mature person (Christian or not) would agree with is this. The more we get older, the more we recognize, how sinful we are, how strong is the nature of sin inside each of us, and how bad we need an attorney or advocate on our side. You see, you may not be a murderer, rapist, criminal, or deceiver. But there is a sinful nature in each one of us. Bible says, “if we say we have not sinned, we make God a liar, and His word is not in us.” (1:10). Typically, a skilled hypocrite will not admit his sins but will be quick to point out sins in others. The great apostle Paul admitted the truth of sin even in himself. Let us listen to what he said, “I am of flesh, sold into the bondage of sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate… So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But If I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. (Romans 7:15-22)
Paul, the greatest missionary the world has ever seen asked this question, “how wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Then He himself gives the answer to his question. “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24-25). Romans 8:1 says, “therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Our verse today says if anyone sins always remember this fact. You are not helpless. Do not hurt yourself or others in your ignorance. There is an advocate available 24 hrs 7 days a week. His name is Christ Jesus the righteous. He is the propitiation, appeasement, or satisfaction for our sins. Jesus Christ satisfied the wrath of the holy God against our sins by his cruel death on the cross of Calvary. He was sinless but carried our sins on His sinless body and shed innocent, spotless, and divine blood for our sins’ propitiation/ appeasement or satisfaction. Then our verse says, “not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”
Hello World, know this – Jesus Christ is not just for Christians only. Christ does not belong to a few Christians here and there. He is the advocate and savior of the whole world. He and His deliverances cut across the cultures, races, and languages. You don’t need to be born into a Christian family to accept Jesus Christ as your savior. Anybody can come to Him for the forgiveness of sins, salvation, and eternal life.
What is the job of an advocate? Attorney Neil Blastman said, “the number one job of an advocate is to protect people from harm. People, who may do bad, or maybe not. But he wants to uphold the law and also help human beings.” Sin, the breaking the law of God, requires an advocate/ attorney to plead our case before the judge of all – the God in heaven. There is only one advocate qualified to take our case to the heavenly court and bring rescue and deliverance for you. The advocate- Jesus Christ- because He has something to offer to appease the wrath of God and make us justified fully (to make us good and right again with God)- the evidence of the shedding of His sinless blood for our sins. He upholds God’s law and helps people to get reconciled with Him. Are you condemned for wrongdoing and sins? Please know this -there is no condemnation in heaven’s court if you are in Christ Jesus. Jesus Christ becomes your advocate now in a small prayer.
Got a moment for today’s prayer? Pray after me:
Father in heaven, I admit my sin to you, my Lord. I am not hiding it. Instead, I plead for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus died, was buried, and rose again for my sins. I know He is my advocate and savior. Please save and deliver me. In the name of Christ, I pray. Amen.”
