Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43.
When Jesus was on the cross carrying humanity’s sin and its punishment on his body, two criminals were also crucified on each side of him. The criminal on the one side insulted Jesus by saying, “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
However, the other criminal rebuked and said, “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he turned to Jesus and said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Do you know how Jesus replied? It is a noteworthy statement from the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” New King James Version translated this, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
People often ask this question- How would I ever now I am saved? Alternatively, if you ask the question are you sure you would go to heaven if you die, many people would respond by saying, I am not
sure or I hope so. You see they are not sure if they are saved. No assurance if they would go to heaven when they die.
Our today’s insight settles this question of your heart. You see, this man on the cross knew he was punished justly and fairly for the crimes he committed. However, He also knew Jesus has done nothing wrong to be crucified along with them. Maybe he heard about Jesus, his miracles, and preaching before. You see he did not ask to alieve his pain or save him from the cross, even though he knew Jesus has the power to do it. Only a small sentence he said, “Remember me why you come into your kingdom.” He knew Jesus would come in His kingdom. He understood Jesus is the savior of the criminals and sinners. Therefore, he said “remember me.”
You see that small request was filled with faith and hope in Jesus. He believed Jesus is on the cross with the same suffering, but he did nothing wrong. He knew Jesus loves him and can save even a criminal like him. He committed his future and eternity in the safe hand of Jesus. By understanding his belief and trust in Him, Jesus said, “Today you will be with Me in paradise. No more requirements- based on his belief and trust in Jesus, He got the assurance of eternal life in heaven from the lips of Jesus.
My friend, how about you? What are you waiting for? Whatever condition you find yourself in now, pray to Jesus to remember you and save you. He will save you right away. Not tomorrow, not in the future, not based on your good works or backgrounds. But based on your simple belief and request. This is how you would get saved. This is how you get the assurance of eternal life in death after death.
Bible says your salvation is not based on your feelings. It is based on the word of God. Bible says, “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13).
Got a moment for today’s prayer?
“Father heaven, I believe Jesus is my savior and he died in my place for my sins. I accept him as my savior and Lord. Please save me and grant eternal life. Thank you for hearing my prayer. In Christ’s name, I pray, Amen.”
