How can I become really happy?
Our typical sources of happiness
During the course of life so far, my friends and those who are close to me gave me different pieces of advice about how to get happy. I am sure people close to you gave you also advice about how to get happy.
A brand new modern car. But the problem is car gets old and dirty. A new house. But in few years, the house gets dirty and new fashion houses come into the market. A good professional career and promotions. This again depends on who your boss is and how good the work environments are. People get frustrated over their career and quite jobs.
In addition, people can grow and develop more and the old things become not satisfactory for many. Good human relationships. Statistics show people get stressed out over close relationships like family relationships and people who thought the relationship wouldgive them happiness quite often ends up in pain and unhappiness.
People search many different avenues to get happiness. If you are single, you think you will get happiness by getting married. And then if you are unhappy, then you start looking for happiness somewhere else. If you are childless, you will assume children will give you happiness. If you don’t have good children, then your heart will be broken all through your life worrying about children. Those who don’t have enough to live to think they will be happier if they get rich. Then when you become richer, you will soon discover richness doesn’t give the happiness you were searching for. Many rich celebrities end up in suicide.
Is there something called real and lasting happiness and if it exists where can I get it?
There was a well-known and famous king in the past. His name was King Solomon. He gained everything under the sun for happiness and meaning in life. Then he discovered and publically proclaimed “all are vanity”. What? You had everything under the sun at your disposal and you are not happy? After enjoying all those wonderful things, you are declaring ‘life is vanity’? If this is the case we may stop pursuing those things he pursued happiness. He pursued many relationships with women. He had luxury houses, buildings, gardens, power, servants. He was the wisest man ever lived on the face of the earth. However, in none of these things he found lasting happiness. If you read the book of Ecclesiastes, King Solomon is listing his pursuits for happiness and how he discovered all these pursuits of happiness were futile and vanity.
A. Dialogue with a rich man
The rich man’s land was very productive and amazed huge wealth from his land. He said to Himself take it easy, eat, drink and be merry. But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you, and now who will own what you have prepared?’ So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:20-21. This rich man thought he gathered everything for his future safety and happiness. But God called him, “you fool”. Then God said you will die on that very night. Then who will own what he has gathered? This is a question we all need to stop and think, right? We need to stop and think the second question and this is –“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” Mark 8:36.

B. A dialogue with seventy.
The Lord Jesus appointed seventy people and sent them out to preach “kingdom of God has come near to you.” The Lord also gave them supernatural healing abilities during their missionary trips. They came back from the mission trip so excited and happy because even the demons were subject to them. They are happy because they have power even over Satan and his demons.
Read where you can find the real joy and happiness in Luke 10:17-22.
The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you the authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”
At that very time, He (Jesus) rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”
Turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.”
The point is this. The Lord has seen Satan when God judges him and threw him from heaven. Satan’s and his demon’s power is nothing when compared to God’s power. The Lord Jesus gave the disciples authority over Satan and demons when He sent them with the mission. Satan and demons are defeated foes. Don’t just be happy over the fact they were subject to the disciples. But be happy and rejoice in this. In what? In fact of their salvation from the kingdom of darkness and in their deliverance from the influence and power of Satan and his demons. To be more specific, be happy that their names are recorded in heaven. Their names are in the book of heaven. They are saved from evil powers and saved and granted eternal life. Be happy in it!

C. Dialogue with a lady who had five husbands and now living with yet another one.
Jesus had a conversation with a lady who had five husbands before and now living with another man. She was searching for happiness in relationships. Jesus wanted to talk to her personally and he made time to meet with her and told her this statement. Read this in John 4:13-14, “Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst, but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” The water that Jesus gives will not make her thirsty again to seek happiness in some other wrong places. The Samaritan lady found the savior of her life in Christ Jesus on that day. This water that makes you happy and contended is the salvation and eternal security that Christ offers you. Additionally, this salvation will become a well of water that springing up to eternal life.
At the end, there is only one source for real and lasting happiness.
Isaiah 12:2-3 says this about the real source of happiness.
“Then you will say on that day,
“I will give thanks to You, O Lord;
For although You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away,
And You comfort me.
“Behold, God is my salvation,
I will trust and not be afraid;
For the Lord God is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation.”
Therefore you will joyously draw water
From the springs of salvation.”
The source of real joy and happiness is the knowledge that God of the universe, the creator God is not angry with you. God’s anger toward sin is already poured out on His Son Jesus Christ and on the cross of Calvary. Now God became your salvation and you will not be afraid. God is my strength and song and He became my salvation. Watch what it says after this – Therefore you will happily and joyously draw water from the springs of salvation.
The real source of your happiness comes out of the springs of your salvation that God gives you. You will continue drawing water. How? Happily and joyously from the source of your salvation. What or who is the source of your salvation? Bible says in Hebrews 5:9, “And being made perfect, He (Jesus) became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.” Jesus Christ is the source of your salvation”. He is the savior who bought salvation for you by paying with his own divine and innocent blood for all of your sins.
See the real happiness and joy comes out of the knowledge that your future is safe and secure in the hand of God. No matter what, no one can snatch heaven and eternal life from you. No one, period. The moment you die, you will not be ending up in hell but you will be in the presence of the LORD in heaven. You can be sure about the safety and security of your personal future. This is the source of happiness when you live in this fallen world.
No matter what happens, you are safe and secure in the hand of God! This gives real and lasting happiness no matter what your current circumstance is.
Jesus said in John 16:22 (c) that no one will take the joy of your salvation. It says, “and no one will take your joy away from you.” See, every other happiness can be taken away from you- your career, your relationships, your house, your cars… etc. However, the inner happiness the LORD GOD gives you – the salvation – no one can take away from you. This is the joy of salvation. Salvation is a well that never dried up. It’s a spring that never stops flowing. God offers the salvation in Isaiah 55:1. It says,
““Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.”
Jesus said this in John 10:28-29
“and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand. “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. “I and the Father are one.”
See your salvation and eternal life cannot be safer and secure than this. Jesus assures you will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of His hand. In addition, you are in Father God’s hand and no one is able to snatch you out of the Father’s hand. You are double safer – in Jesus’s hand and in Father’s hand. Such is assurance of salvation and eternal life that the Lord Jesus offers. This is the source of real happiness.
