The second coming of the Lord and the establishment of the one thousand year kingdom
Bible teach us the second coming of Christ has two parts. The first is the rapture and that is described in John 14:1-3; 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. This is the time Christ will descend from heaven and living christians and already died christians will be caught up to clouds to meet the Lord in the air. They will get glorified, heavenly bodies at this time. Believers will be meeting the Lord in the air and taken back to heaven. This is to protect His bride (believers) from the wrath of God in the ensuing great tribulation period. Christ won’t come literally to this earth on this occasion. There will be a 7 year tribulation in the world, after rapture happens and church will be in heaven during this time. This is how the Lord delivers the church from the coming wrath on the face of this earth. The believers will be given rewards for their services to the Lord in heaven in this time period, when the christ rejecting world is going through the great tribulation.
The second part of the future coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is depicted in Revelation when Christ will come to this earth with all the believers who are already raptured and living with Him in heaven. At this time of His second coming to the earth, Christ will establish His kingdom on this earth and will rule the world for one thousand years in fulfillment of several Old Testament prophecies and of the Davidic covenant (2 Samuel 7:12). This time Christ literally comes to this earth. The prophet Zechariah explains this time in Zechariah 14:3-4, “Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives which is in front of Jerusalem on east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in to in its middle from east to west by a very large valley, so that half of the mountain will move toward the north and other half toward the south”. In the New Testament, the Book of Revelation chapter 19:11-21 describes in detail this event of the second coming of the Lord with the church from heaven. Verse 16 says, “And on His robe and His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS”. Verse 19 says, “And I saw the beast (Antichrist) the kings of the earth and their armies, assembled to make war against Him who sat upon the horse, and against His army. And the beast (Antichrist) was seized, and with him the false prophet (the supporter of Antichrist) who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and this who worshipped his image; these two were thrown alive in to the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.” This is the end of the great tribulation.
After the description of the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ in to this earth and after the defeat of the antichrist, false prophet, Revelation chapter 20:1-3 says the old dragon, the serpent of the old, who is the devil and Satan, will be bound for a thousand years. The devil was the source of power for the antichrist works during the tribulation period. Antichrist was the representation of the devil like Christ was the representation of the holy God in heaven. Now the the architect of all the evil from the Garden of Eden- the old serpent of the Garden and the great deceiver of all mankind- will be bound for one thousand years and will be thrown in to abyss and shut and sealed over him, so that he should not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years of the rule and kingdom of Christ on the face of the earth were completed.
Revelation 20:2-4 describes this thousand year rule of the Christ on this earth. It also says His saints of will rule with Him in this thousand year period on this earth. Saints and believers will have have lot of responsibilities of ruling the entire world along with Christ. Revelation 19, 20, 21 and 22 are chronological. Chapter 19 describes Christ’s return to the earth for the establishment of the promised kingdom on this earth, Chapter 20 talks about the one thousand year rule of Christ along with His saints and chapter 21 and 22 talks about eternity after the millennium.
In fact the whole book of Revelation can be studied chronologically. Chapters 1-3 talks about the current age which is the Church age and these chapters contains the messages of Jesus Christ to the current church age. Then chapter 4 gives the glimpse of rapture because church age is followed by rapture. Chapter 4:1 says, “After these things (means after the church age) I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I heard, like the sound a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.” The rapture passages in 1 Corinthians 15:52 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16 also talks about the sound of trumpet.
Immediately after the rapture, Revelation chapter 5 shows the church in heaven worshiping God and Christ. The song they sing when the elders fell down to worship the Lamb is this,” For thou was slain, and did purchase for God with Thy blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” What a beautiful picture of the worship of the church because they were bought by the blood Christ?
The very next chapter, that is, Revelation chapter 6 talks about the severe and great tribulation on this earth. The judgment are listed chronologically – seal judgments in chapter 6-7, trumpet judgments from chapter 8-9 and bowl judgments in chapter 16.
It’s interesting to note that after the 5th chapter in the Book of Revelation, there is no mention of the name of Church. Why? The reason is church is raptured in chapter 4 and she is in heaven in chapter 5. The chapter 6 starts with the tribulation on this earth and church name is not mentioned at all during this time period in the book of Revelation. This is an added support for the fact that church will not go through tribulation and she will be delivered and protected in heaven prior to tribulation.
But all the wrath of God on this wicked and Godless world will be over at the end of a seven year period, at the second coming of the Lord with the church from heaven in to this earth in Chapter 19. Then Christ will establish His one thousand year kingdom (Revelation 20:2) on the earth and His saints will rule with Him.
