He satisfies your years with good things and renews your youth like the eagles.
“Who satisfies your years with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.” Psalm 103:5
This is yet another life experience of King David and he says God is the one who satisfies your years with good things. David had a heart of seeking God from his early young age. He was away from home and his parents because of his responsibility of taking care of the father’s sheep. It was not an easy job to shepherd a flock of sheep. Those days the owners had a number of sheep. He understood he needs God’s help and protection to keep all these sheep safe and secure from wild animals. Many times his life was also in danger due to approaching wild animals like bear and lion. Then God granted him a surprise blessing- Samuel the prophet anointed him as the next king of Israel while he was faithfully taking care of his father’s sheep. What a promotion! From a shepherd boy to the king of Israel.
No other source gave David the real satisfaction.
The new anointment cost him a lot. King Saul became highly jealous of David and tried to kill in different occasions. David might have thought his first marriage with Saul’s daughter Michael would bring him satisfaction. But unfortunately it was a pain for him and she abandoned him and ridiculed him. He thought he got a trusted friend in Jonathan. But David had to run away from him in fear of Saul and later his trusted friend was killed in a war. He might have thought his children would satisfy him. Unfortunately Absalom his own son was rebellious toward him and hurt him deeper than any other person in this world, I believe. Absalom, David’s son sought to kill David. He thought some of his dear friends would give him satisfaction but in his difficult times, there were not many people to support him or help him in his needs.
Big Lesson.
Through it all, King David learned a big spiritual lesson. He is sharing this with you this eternal principle in the above verse – God is the one who satisfies your years with good things. Period! My friend, No body else can do this job for you. But God is able and willing to do this for you- to give you satisfaction in life. In Psalm 34, King David says the same thing about God. Read it below.
Psalm 34:4-10, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
“he delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant;
their faces are never covered with shame.
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
he saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,
and he delivers them.
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Fear the Lord, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
The lions may grow weak and hungry,
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.”
Did you notice verse 5, “Those who look to Him (the Lord) are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.” Temporarily David may have gone through some shameful experiences, but God turned the table for him. The Lord satisfied him with good things. His sufferings, shame or problems didn’t last long because he says verse 1 above says, “I sought the LORD and he answered me, he delivered me from all my fears”. God eventually satisfied him with God’s good things. Then David is admonishing his reader in verse8, “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” He also says in verse 10 the lions may grow hungry and weak, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. You see, all good things that can satisfy you come from God.
The true souce of permanent satisfaction
You may think your spouse, children, job, position or wealth can satisfy you but unfortunately, the truth is revealed here in Psalm 103:5 and that is this – only God can satisfy a person. Many who seek satisfaction in the things that this world can offer ended up in more anxiety and frustration and few ended up even in suicide. When are we going to learn the lesson the world and the things of the world won’t satisfy us? The world and its pleasures may give you a brief satisfaction but that will generally be followed by much dissatisfaction. This is why Jesus said to the Samaritan woman the brevity of the satisfaction that the world gives in John 4:13-14. It says, “Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst, but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”
God is the source of all our good and perfect gifts is reiterated in these Bible passages.
Acts 17:25 “And human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.”
Psalms 37:4Take delight in the Lord and he will give you your heart’s desires.
Genesis 30:1-2 “Jacob became angry with her and said, “Can I do what only God can do?”
Psalm 145:16, “You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing”.
Psalm 107:9, “For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.”
James 1:17, “ Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
But you see God’s good blessings and gifts don’t mean only material blessings like a big house, expensive cars or huge wealth. These are things that apparently glitters today and disappears tomorrow. The good blessings and gifts are those that are permanent, unconditional love and mercy of God in your life, eternal and everlasting.
God’s blessings and gifts are perfect and good and they are not sinful and are not the results of temptation and doing wrong or immoral things. You will be satisfied in your soul and spirit and when you soul spirit is filled with God’s good things, you will have joy from God and that will set you apart from others who selfishly seek material things which can never satisfy their souls and spirits.
Why don’t you set your heart to fill you with God’s good blessings and gifts so that you will be really satisfied internally which will result in external joy and peace? Remember what Jesus said in John 4:13-14, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst, but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” You can buy an expensive car and next year or year after you will want a better one. You will buy a new home and in few years you will want another big and spacious house.
In contrast to worldly things and pleasures, why don’t you wrap your self and your dear ones in God’s good and perfect things?
The result of connecting to God’s goodness
The result of wrapping yourself in God’s perfect and good blessings is this – so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.” This is an amazing and blessed result. Your youth will be renewed like the eagles. Eagles renew their youth by shedding their old feathers and they will let the new feathers to come on it and after this incident, I heard they will live long for another 40 more years. God says He will renew your youth like eagle renews its youth. When you seek God’s good and perfect blessings, when you seek after God and His goodness, He will renew your youth. What a reward for seeking God’s goodness in your life. Seek after God and His goodness. Bible says in Isaiah 40:30-31 that you will soar on wings like eagles if you put your trust and hope in God. Read this below.
“Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.”
Do you want to know God’s goodness toward you? God loves you so much and He has a good plan for you – a plan not to harm you but to bless you. He gave His only begotten son, Christ, so that whoever believes in Christ will never perish but have everlasting life. This is the beginning of God’s love and goodnes toward you. He gave His only son for you, to die for all your sins and iniquities. This much God loved you. Look at the cross where Christ was horribly crucified in your place. He paid for all of your sins and you can become a child of the living God today. Whoever calls upon the name of Jesus Christ, they are given the freedom to become God’s children. Wrap yourself with God’s love and God’s salvation in and through Christ. The one who gave His own son, Christ, for your sins, will He not give every other perfect and good gifts and blessings for you. Surely He will.
