The basic passage that defines the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is 1 Cor.12:13-14. “The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so, the body is not made up of one part but of many.” It does not require any signs as some might teach to be validated. It is an act by which each believer, regardless of their racial or social status is baptized (joined) to one body -the church. Spirit baptism is not repeated either as some may teach. Water baptism is the outward expression of this event of the work of the Holy Spirit by which one is saved.
Spirit Baptism and Water Baptism- what happened in Acts 2:41
John the Baptist and Jesus said believers will be baptized by the Holy Spirit later. In the early church, as the book of Acts informs, the baptism of the Holy Spirit (upon the profession of faith in Christ and divine act of joining the new believers to the church) and the water baptism simultaneously occurred. Apparently, there was not a delay between the two. The passage above is apparently an example of the spirit baptism of those new believers upon repentance and the immediate water baptism. This is what I think happened.
