Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7).
Resting in the Lord and waiting for Him is not easy
Rest in the Lord waiting patiently in faith for him to act. This is somehow a hard lesson for many of us. I know I blew this step in my life more than once. Many giants of faith in the past also stumbled on this point including Abraham, David, and Moses. Therefore, David knew exactly what he was talking about in this Psalm.
Remember he said in verse 25 of this Psalm that “I have been young, and now I am old’. He is at a ripe age now with life’s many experiences. Children turn into young men and girls and young men and women later become fathers and mothers when they become fathers and mothers they have a lot of life experiences. They learned through their errors and mistakes and in the old age, the fathers and mothers are seasoned with experiences from Lord’s school of learning for many years. Typically, a Christian at his or her young age is more vulnerable to this pitfall of not resting in the Lord or waiting for the Lord. May all of us take this advice of resting in the Lord and waiting patiently for Him to act in our hearts. Especially are you a Christian who is young in age? This is very valuable for you so that you won’t regret later in your life. When I say young men, I have a broad scope though. I mean anywhere from 17-18 to later 40’s or even early 50’s.
Resting in the Lord is an outgrowth of previous principles we discussed earlier.
I believe there is a reason why David says this point at the end of all other points we discussed in the last few weeks. (refer and previous weekly insights). You see, resting in the Lord and waiting patiently for Him to act would become easy if we followed the steps we have discussed prior to this section. Therefore, in our valley experiences, it is very important we need to apply all the points we discussed earlier so that resting in the Lord and wait patiently for Him to act would be a natural outgrowth from the previous valuable points. Let us recall all points we discussed before in our valley experiences
1. Trust the character of God (vs 3a)
2. Do good (Vs 3b)
3. Dwell in the promised land and feed on His faithfulness (Vs 3c)
4. Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart (Vs. 4)
5. Commit your ways to the Lord and trust Him, He will do it (Vs.5)
You see a natural progression here in the above verse? Yes, I believe it is true and intended exactly like that. Many of us fail in resting in the Lord and waiting patiently for the Lord to act not because we don’t want to do it but because we haven’t applied the previous steps already in our deep valley experiences. In our deep valleys, we are thrown out of balance, confused and worried. It is not easy to keep the above disciplines. But it is very important to keep these principles in our deep difficult times to come out of it victorious for our good and God’s glory.
Now, when we did all the above, what is next? Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him to act.
Rest here means hold your peace, be still and wait, be quiet. The literal meaning is ‘be silent’ and ‘wait before the Lord’. This is not a time to get angry, fret, express complaints or dissatisfaction. This is a time of actively waiting without getting angry, fretting, complaining or murmuring. This is a time to be content with God’s provisions and patiently wait for God’s time to fulfill your desires that God placed in your heart. In other words, you don’t need to make it happen. You don’t need to strive for it. Stop, pray, listen, look and wait for the Lord. Again, the secret of success here is you were trusting in the character of God, you started doing good to others, you were dwelling in the promised land and feeding on His faithfulness, you were delighting in the Lord who will give the desires of your heart and you committed your ways to the Lord and continue to trust Him.
Now Hush and stand still
Now Hush, be quiet, stand still, be patient. Verse 7 (b)says as you rest in the Lord, do not fret when other people succeed in their ways and when they carry out their wicked schemes. Let them carry out their wicked schemes. You do not fret over it. Verse 8 says as you rest in the Lord, refrain from anger and turn from wrath. If you get angry and give yourself to wrath even at this point it can lead only to evil. In contrast to all these things, you rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him to act. He will surely act. Verse 6 promises God will make your righteousness shine like the dawn and you will be vindicated like the noontime of the sun. Beautiful! Right? You see, you refrain from the feelings of anger and wrath, don’t fret over wicked people who have made their plans against you and your programs. You rest in the Lord. Hush, quiet, stand still. Do you know what God going to do for you?
The results of resting and waiting for the Lord are amazing
God will make your right mindset and actions in the sight of Him shine like dawn. It will shine in front of others, even in front of your enemies and wicked ones. You will be vindicated like the noontime of the day where sun’s light is in it’s fullest force. You see God will do it. This is His promise. Bible says in Psalm 23, “You (The Lord) prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.”
You see, the result of following the principles we listed in the last few weeks will motivate you to rest in the Lord for Him to act. As a result of you patiently resting and waiting on the Lord for Him to act, the Lord will prepare a table for you in the presence of your enemies, He will anoint your head with Oil. Finally, God promises your cup will overflow. You will come out of the valley experiences to the other side victoriously.
Will you trust in His promise and be quiet, stand still and wait for Him to act?
Bible affirms you will safely reach the other side through the valley experiences. When you reach the other side with the hand of the Lord, You will glorify God the rest of your life and you will be ready to serve you in a better and supernatural way for His glory.
