John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
The background.
The disciples of Jesus Christ were very much troubled because Jesus announced that He is going to leave after being with them about three years. That is not a surprise for us today, right? Because we know now that Jesus was on a mission. He came to this world to die for your sins and my sins. He came to give Himself as a ransom for you and me. In order to save you from the power of the devil and hell, He died in your place paid for your sins, and then he rose again by the power of God on the third day. This is how He obtained salvation for our souls. But His disciples didn’t know all these that we are aware of today.
Jesus said to them in Matthew 17:22-23 that He is going to be delivered into the hands of men; and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day. Bible says the disciples were deeply grieved to hear this from Jesus. In John 13:21 Jesus said, “very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray Me.” Then later in verse 33, Jesus said, ““My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come”. You see, these disciples left everything and followed Jesus. They left their boats, their dear ones, and homes, their livelihood of catching fish- all because of the and amazing call of Jesus. Now Jesus says He is going to leave them. This made them sorrowful and sad. Their hopes are crushed and they are very much troubled. They were thinking what are we going to do now? Our leader is no more with us and we are going to be in trouble.
Jesus said two times in John 14, “Do not let your hearts be troubled (John 14:1 and John 14:27). Jesus also promised when he goes back to heaven, He would send a permanent helper who will with them forever- the Holy Spirit. He said in Jon 14:26, “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you”.
After this Jesus uttered this well known, divine and all famous words. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives. Therefore do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
The peace that Jesus gives is not like the world gives because the source of this peace is different.
Peace in the midst of life’s serious challenges and trials is one of the most precious gifts a child of God enjoys. Ask any Christian who is a true believer in Christ. They will testify this truth.
The peace the Lord Jesus give to you is not like the world gives. Why? First of all, the world cannot give you lasting peace in your life and second of all even if you enjoy any peace from this world, that is going to be short term or temporary and will disappear pretty soon. But the peace Jesus grants you is not temporary but it is divine and enduring peace no matter what you face here on this planet earth. Bible says in Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” The peace that the Lord Jesus gives you is beyond human understanding and permanent because its source is divine and permanent. The source of this peace is the Holy Spirit who is dwelling in you and the eternal word of God. As Jesus promised in John 14:26 the helper or advocate who is the Holy Spirit dwelling in a believer of Christ will comfort you, remind you and teach you the several wonderful promises of God which is in store for your life and my friend this is more than sufficient for you whatever tragic or severe your trials and suffering appear to be. Holy Spirit is eternal and the word that He uses to comfort you is also God’s word which is eternal. Bible says in Psalm 119:89, “ Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.” Jesus said in Mathew 24:35, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” This is the source of the surety and permanency of your peace in Christ Jesus.
Let me tell you a story. My friend’s little daughter gets very sad because he had to be away from home for several days due to his business needs. The little one is Dad’s girl and her heart was so intimate with her Dad. The Dad knowing this truth, whenever he comes home would bring beautiful necklaces and bracelets for his little beauty and would put these ornaments on her neck and little hands. Even though she was sad, her face would glow and shine with joy and she would jump up and down when she sees these beautiful ornaments and would hug and kiss her Dad again and again.
When a child of God goes through severe trials and problems in this life, the Holy Spirit would comfort, remind and teach them by showing the most beautiful, precious and wonderful ornaments of God’s promises that are in store for them in future. Bible says the Bible words that Holy Spirit uses to comfort and console a child of God are “more precious than gold, that much pure gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.”
Yes, Jesus didn’t leave us without help. He gave us the best gift to face our trials and problems. The Lord Jesus gives you His peace. He said, “My peace I give you”. This peace He gives, the world can never, never grant you. It’s the divine, eternal and permanent peace and only Christ can give you in and through His Holy Spirit.
My friend, do you have this peace? I know, this world makes you so worried and sorrowful. Bible says the problems, griefs, and sorrows will only increase as we face the future ahead of us. But the Lord protects His children with His divine and eternal peace. In the midst of all the trashes this world throws at you, Jesus promises His divine and enduring peace.
You can have the peace of Christ today.
If you never accepted Christ as your savior, you can be saved and enjoy the peace of God by a small prayer. See the Lord loves you so dearly that He died for your sins, and paid for your sins. You can live with Him eternally in heaven, not based on your works, but because of what He has done on your behalf. This is the good news of the Gospel. In addition, there is no reason to live in this world with no peace.
Please pray with me.
Lord Jesus, I accept you as my savior and Lord. I admit I am a sinner and you died in my place so that I can be saved and live with you eternally. I want the divine peace that only you can offer. Thank you for saving and granting me your peace. Amen.
